Last Tuesday, the Mayhem Poets were announced as the winners of the IdeaWins Challenge on the Today Show. What’s the big idea: it’s a poetry slam café!The four finalists included Given Campbell, Alexandra Dimitru, Dana Greaves and the Mayhem Poets.
The ideaWins campaign, for Microsoft Small Business Accounting software, scoured the country for the BEST new business idea. The reward, try $100,000 start-up capital, a one year lease on a commercial store-front in NYC and all of the Microsoft Small Business Accounting software they need to keep their new ship in shape.
While an entry on the proliferation of the ‘morning talk show phenomenon’ would be interesting and perhaps a little disconcerting (having studied the crowds outside that would have killed to touch Al’s Burberry tie and seemed fairly impervious to the actual news segments), I’ll reserve that commentary for another time.
For now, I think what is most interesting about the success of a small business is that it seems to be contingent on striking a harmonious chord between INNOVATION and EFFICIENCY. Easier said than done…right? Maybe not.
I would argue that innovation is everywhere, it’s the efficiency, or the determination to navigate the administrative and lackluster undertakings that prevents those with great IDEAS from getting out there and staying out there. From small business accounting software to paper clips, we need them and all of the in between to make great ideas work. Kind of boring right? Not really, because the maintenance of these ‘bores’ that will keep the Mayhem Poets going strong for a long time. Slam on…
CONGRATULATIONS MAYHEM POETS!

They've sure done a great job for them to be highly recognized by Microsoft. How many people or groups joined the Idea Wins challenge?
